Cotterdale is a very small hamlet, consisting of only 12 cottages. To find this haven of peace and quiet follow the narrow Dale road for a mile and a half as it runs alongside the twisting, bubbling Cotter Beck a fast flowing mountain steam after which the Dale is named. As you drive along the narrow Dale road towards our beautiful Yorkshire Dales holiday cottages in Cotterdale a true perspective of the picture postcard location of the hamlet is obtained. Cotterdale nestles under the protection of high fells, parts which are covered with thick pine forest. Surrounding Cotterdale are green meadows and upland pastures divided by a maze of stone walls between which sheep and cattle peacefully graze.

Here in Cotterdale you will find the perfect place for a relaxing self-catering country cottage holiday, away from shops, telephones or even street lights; here your companions will be red squirrels, sheep, cows, pheasants as well as the ten permanent residents. Yet the market town of Hawes Wensleydale is just 4 miles away.

Quiet as it is now, it perhaps was not always so, for the dale has had a long and fascinating history stretching back as far as the Iron Age. Indeed, a perfectly preserved sword from those distant times was discovered in Cotterdale and now is displayed in the British Museum.

Many of the finest attractions in the Yorkshire Dales are natural landscape features such as the vast amphitheatre of Malham Cove, the sculptured stones known as Brimham Rocks and the yawning chasm of Gaping Gill near Ingleton. Not forgetting some of the amazing water falls you will find in the Yorkshire Dales such as Cotter Force (Photo opposite) which the Cotter Beck at the bottom of the cottage's garden runs into, Aysgarth Falls, Hardraw Force to name but a few. Farming is at the heart of Dales' life and a visit to a farm visitor centre or one of the many agricultural shows will get you close to the traditional way of life.
